One person's trash

New York City has the most amazing trash. You can find couches, dressers, and all sorts of weird things that people once held dear. These things are often picked up and taken into a new home and the cycle continues. Well one person's trash is my new desk!

I was taking some boxes down to the basement of our building to throw away (unlike many other tenants who leave them out and in the way for the staff to collect) and found an old table someone had thrown away. At first inspection it didn't look like much. The legs were dirty and tarnished, there was paint on the surface, and it had a noticeable tilt. Still, it held some potential so I ran back up to my apartment for my measuring tape. I've been looking for a nice table to replace the glass desk I'm currently using and I wanted something bigger but also something that would fit in the same location. Well wouldn't you know it, this was the perfect size. Such luck! I quickly loaded it in the elevator and whisked it up to its new home.

Some silver polish, windex, a shim, and TLC and it was looking all sparkly and clean. It slid in perfectly and matches our other furniture (mostly craigslist finds). I couldn't be happier!

Great find...and doesn't your rescue constitute a green alternative?

Very cool! Kim's right - "reuse" is even better than recycling. A couple years ago I scored a great little funky green table with a cane work top and fluted legs from a pile of furniture someone had illegally dumped outside a storage container facility. A little TLC and I had a new nightstand. I still cruise by that area periodically with my eyes peeled for any good finds!

totally awesome! Free is good and totally worth the elbow grease.

I like the lumbar support you have on your chair. Did you make it?
